For those who do not plan on using the laptop for complex graphics, music, or video programs, however, this is a wonderful choice. These laptops have all the essentials needed for home and work word processing, data processing, and internet access.

Among the cheapest brands is Acer. Acer laptops are useful and come in full-size or small laptop models. These laptops offer the standard PC operating systems as well as run all PC programs. These laptops can be purchased from numerous retailers both online and in-store. They range from around $300 and up.

Toshiba laptops under 500 are also available. Most of Toshiba’s models are not found in the $500 cost bracket, however, they do provide some models for under $500. The models for under $500 are usually smaller sized models, such as 14-inch screens. These laptops, however, include a great amount of processing performance for their size. They can be purchased with standard PC operating systems set up and available for use. They work all PC programs. Again, in order to be more affordable they have gave up some processing power. While the laptop will have no problem with many programs, it is not suitable for graphics-heavy games or large-scale video editing. Nevertheless, for the needs of many business professionals, those who primarily use the internet for surfing, and students, these laptops are perfect.

HP laptops below 500 are a bit harder to find. HP does offer a few smaller models for under $500. These have smaller monitors such as 11-inch or 13-inch sizes. The smaller laptops have very little hard disk memory such as 2-4 gigabytes. However, they are useful for word processing and internet surfing. They are light and movable and simple to operate. All HP laptops use PC operating systems. In addition, you can purchase larger models of HP laptops at discounted prices for under $500. These will be 15-inch or bigger models. They have more processing power as well as a lot more built-in memory. If they are bought from a reliable retailer or refurbisher, these can often be just as nice as a brand-new laptop but are offered for nearly 50% the price.

Dell laptops under 500 are also available. Dell gives some smaller models, below 15-inch screens, for under $500. There are also used and refurbished items available for a lesser price and these are often larger and more powerful for under $500. There are also certain sales and retailers offering reduced prices which would yield a Dell laptop for under $500. Such retailers have sales on overstocked items. They also have sales on items that are now considered “old” in the sense that there is a newer and stronger model available.

With some thorough searching and the knowledge of what brands are the best laptops for the least expensive prices, it is not difficult to find a good deal. Dell, Toshiba, Acer, and HP laptops are most easily available. Laptops under 500 are easy to find now that technologies have enhanced and for basic processing most users do not have to spend any more than that.

Usually located underneath the plastic shell of your laptop’s screen casing is a small piece of circuit board and it is probably the cause of one of the most common problems related to screen failure and, more specifically, dimness, or darkness to the screen itself.

Giving power to the backlight is considered as the main purpose of the inverter. When it comes to the way it works, it is actually simple because it takes power from the laptop itself by a small inverter lead that runs from the motherboard of the laptop, sometimes it is a direct lead on it’s own, other times this lead can be connected into the inverter through the LCD cable (the lead that runs from the motherboard to the back of the screen itself), giving the screen its visual display.

Most of the time, the lead that gives the left end of the converter power is then plugged into a small white socket and from the other end, usually the right side, the backlight lead from the screen is plugged into another white socket. The backlight also refers to a very small, thin, long, very delicate light bulb that runs along the very bottom or sometimes the side of the screen.

The dimness or darkness to the screen in most cases or flickering of the backlight are the problems related to the inverter. Although not usually, there are also times when it can stop the screen from working at all. When it comes to laptop screens, a common fault is a dark or dim screen but it is generally assumed that it is the backlight that is at fault, sometimes this may be correct but more often or not it is simply the inverter not working, or not giving the backlight the power it needs. Because the backlight is very fragile and can be easily broken, the inverter is usually cheaper to replace than the backlight. On some occasions a repair of the inverter is possible, although usually labour charges on fixing the inverter can sometimes lead up to being more expensive than simply replacing it.

When it’s time to buy an inverter, what most companies will require is the part number which is usually printed on a bar code on the outside of the inverter but sometimes you may need to look carefully to find it. Being lucky would mean getting away with just stating what your laptop make and model is, for example ‘I have an IBM Thinkpad T22 and I need an inverter’ but even though we try our hardest to locate the inverter with just these details, sometimes you will need to provide the part number here is an example of a part number from the inverter for an IBM Thinkpad T22, (10L1402). All three laptops as a whole are basically the same apart from the processor and this inverter is also compatible with the IBM T21 and T20.

Increasing your memory can prove to be a very simple way to increase your Mac’s performance. Multi-tasking is enhanced considerably and processing times for memory intensive software (think photoshop or final cut) are decreased considerably. The outcome is often a great increase in overall productiveness.

Here’s an simple way to discover out how much RAM your mac is using and if installing more would be worthwhile:

Open your Activity Monitor (it should be in your Utilities folder). Click on the System Memory tab. If the pie chart is mostly green and blue (representing free and inactive memory, respectively), then you’re in good shape. If the chart is mostly yellow and red (active and wired), then you’re running out of memory and may experience problems. Try opening your activity monitor while conducting different activities. For example, you’ll probably have RAM to spare if you’re only checking email, but rendering video will probably reveal a different result.

How much Memory should I get?

Its pretty simple. Get the most that your system supports.

What kind of RAM should I get?

Don’t concern yourself too much with the brand name. Apple often buys Samsung, Hynix and Micron modules in bulk. There is nothing unique about Apple branded memory (on top of that, Apple’s mark-up is outrageous). Any brand should do- just make sure it fits the specs of your system. Also, consider the warranty offered. Some offer 1 year while others offer a lifetime warranty.

Tips:

Any modern mac computer will have at least two memory slots. Although the brand name isn’t altogether very important, some issues can arise if you mix brands (eg. run one Samsung and one Micron). It is strongly advised that you not do this.

The different variations can be scary for the unfamiliar. Just remember this: If your mac calls for DDR2, then use it and use nothing else. DDR3 will not make your system faster- it just won’t work. Do not mix up your DDR’s.

Generally speaking, the RAM that you buy for your mac will be able to “downclock”. For example, a 1333Mhz module will run in a laptop which is designed for 1066Mhz. Doing this has both benefits and drawbacks. The benefit of doing this is pricing. Like any other commodity, scarcity can result in price increases. It may be a challenge to find 1066Mhz , as it is seldom used anymore (and the price has therefore increased). In this case it may be worth your while to purchase 1333mhz instead.

It should be mentioned however that doing this may cause problems with your mac, especially older macbooks. In addition, if your mac uses a “Penryn” processor (2008, 2009), it is recommended that you use only the actual RAM as specified by Apple- some concerns have been revealed.
